Amazon has launched a range of new tablets including the all-new Voyage, a premium eReader with a glass screen, a magnesium back and a design that’s much like Amazon’s Fire tablets. Although it has a touchscreen, either side of the bezel are touch-sensitive strips which you can press to turn the page – handy for one-handed operation. They also have haptic feedback, so you know when you’ve pressed.

The Voyage will go on sale in the UK on November 4th, but you can pre-order one today from Amazon’s website.

There are two models on offer, both of which are expensive as far as eReaders go. The Wi-Fi only version costs £169, but if you want 3G for free downloading of books on the move, that’s £60 extra at £229.

The screen is the Voyage’s stand-out feature. Unlike previous Kindle eReaders, the screen is flush with the bezel, and it’s also covered in glass. However, unlike most glass-screened tablets which are highly reflective, the Voyage has ‘micro-etched’ glass which diffuses the light. Amazon says it also makes the screen feel just like a piece of paper.
Before the Voyage the latest Paperwhite had the highest pixel density at 213ppi. Amazon hasn’t revealed the pixel dimensions of the new 6in screen, but does quote the density as 300 pixels per inch. It’s most likely to be a 1440x1080-pixel screen.
Amazon says it has the highest contrast, sharpness and brightness of any Kindle eReader, being almost 40 percent brighter than the most recent Paperwhite. Brightness is adjusted automatically, and a clever feature slowly dims the screen over time in the dark to match how your eyes adjust to darkening conditions.
The device measures 162x115x7.6mm, so it’s very thin, and weighs just 180g (or 188g for the 3G version).
There’s 4GB of storage, and the battery is claimed to last for six weeks. However, that allows for only 30 minutes of reading per day.
You don’t get a charger in the box, but the Voyage will recharge from any USB charger, or a computer’s USB port.

In addition to all the usual Kindle features including Page Flip, a forthcoming software update will improve upon X-Ray and let you quickly read “important passages… to remind you what’s happened”.
The update will also bring Family Library, so you’ll be able to share your books with one other person, and you’ll also be able to read all of theirs.
