LG's new GFlex 2 smartphone is built in the spirit of flip handsets, with curvy contours to make chatting on the phone more convenient.

Beyond the sleek 5.5-inch screen, the smartphone offers some of the most advanced mobile technologies available, said Frank Lee, manager at LG, during a press conference at CES.

The smartphone has a P-OLED screen that can display images at 1080p resolution. It also has Qualcomm's 64-bit octa-core Snapdragon 810 processor, which is able to process 4K video and supports the latest LTE video and broadcast technologies.

It will run on Android 5.0. The screen won't crack easily, as energy is dispersed on impact, and the handset also has a "self-healing" back designed to automatically remove scratches.

But the most attention-drawing feature is the slightly curved design. Lee said that the GFlex 2 was designed so the contours are closer to the ear and lips, which is a more natural design when chatting on a phone. Most smartphones are flat and not as convenient to chat on.

The smartphone weighs 152 grams. It has 32GB of storage, 2GB of DDR4 RAM and a micro-SD slot. It has a 13-megapixel rear camera and a 2-megapixel front camera.

The price for the smartphone was not provided. It will be available at the end of the month in South Korea and then ship globally afterwards.

It remains to be seen whether the new smartphone helps LG regain its mojo in a market dominated by Apple, Samsung and others.
