In a couple of weeks Microsoft will unveil a Consumer Preview of Windows 10. No longer just a desktop OS, Windows 10 will also run on phones and tablets - and the Microsoft Lumia 940 will be one of the first Windows Phones to run Windows 10. Microsoft Lumia 940 UK release date

The fact that the Microsoft Lumia 940 runs Windows 10 means we'll be waiting a while yet for it to arrive. Plus the Lumia 930 went on sale in the UK only on 17 July, so it'll be at least the end of the summer before the 940 makes an appearance.

It's probable that the Lumia 940 will arrive with Windows 10. On 21 January Microsoft is holding a Windows 10 event, during which we expect it to unveil a Consumer Preview. Read more about the Windows 10 UK release date, price and new features here.

It has promised to offer more details on Windows 10 in April at its BUILD conference, at which point the Technical Preview licence will also expire (15 April 2015), so we can certainly expect a more complete beta then.

For now the company has said only that Windows 10 will launch later in the year, although Reutersquotes Kevin Turner, COO at Microsoft, saying "By late summer and early fall we'll be able to bring out this particular OS (operating system). That's the current plan of record."

Our best guess is a July/August launch for the Microsoft Lumia 940, but we will update this story as more information becomes available.

Microsoft Lumia 940 UK price

Replacing the Nokia Lumia 930, the Microsoft Lumia 940 will likely have a similar price. The Nokia Lumia 930 costs £435, and with a bit of wiggle room given the upgraded spec, we wouldn't expect to pay much more than £450 for the Lumia 940 - especially given that Microsoft will want to push Windows 10 on phones. We'll update this story as soon as more information is available.
