Samsung Galaxy S5 updating to Android 5.0 Lollipop right now

The wait for Samsung Galaxy S5 owners in the UK to upgrade to Android 5.0 Lollipop is finally over, as Samsung has begun rolling out the update for Google's latest version of its mobile operating system.

Samsung is aiming to get the update out to its customers as quickly as possible so there's a good chance that by the time you've read this you'll have the update ready to be installed on your Galaxy S5 handset. If it hasn't turned up yet, be patient - it can take a few days.

As with previous Android releases, Samsung has included its customised interface known as TouchWiz. Samsung's Lollipop update is also based on the slightly older Android 5.0 (LRX21T) code. Since then Google has released Android Lollipop 5.0.1, which addresses a number of bugs.

Update to the update

Samsung is likely to have gone with the Android 5.0 update to prevent any further delays to its customers receiving the new operating system. A further update to Android 5.0.1 will occur a few months afterwards.

Some of the new features Samsung Galaxy S5 owners can look forward to include lockscreen and heads-up notifications, MirrorLink and an improved fingerprint sensor thanks to Samsung's new drivers.

Android 5.0 Lollipop also includes a redesigned interface, known as Material Design, which Samsung has incorporated into its TouchWiz theme.
