Rise of the Tomb Raider release date: When is Rise of the Tomb Raider coming out?

The current release date for Rise of the Tomb Raider is 'Holiday 2015' so you can expect the game to be released at some point between October and December next year, though it's still possible that the game will be subject to some delays.

To begin with, the game will only be available for Xbox 360 and Xbox One, as Microsoft has signed an exclusive deal for the game. It's been confirmed that the deal is for "timed exclusivity", so it should be released on PS4 and PC at some point in the future.

That hasn't stopped PC users and PS4 owners from feeling extremely disappointed and understandably angry about the news of Rise of the Tomb Raider's Xbox exclusivity, particularly as they were able to enjoy the first game in the series as soon as it was released in 2013.

Eurogamer has published an interview with Xbox boss Phil Spencer that gives some further insight into the controversial deal.

"I knew there would be some pushback when we came out," said Spencer. "Certain people won't believe this: (the deal) doesn't come from an evil space. It comes from a space where there's an opportunity that maps really well with what we need in terms of the genre, and a partner that's looking for partnership. Other people can do the deal, but it was a deal that fit well with us. I think it could help the franchise in the long run and help Crystal and Square and us."

Rise of the Tomb Raider: Gameplay & new features

So far, we don't know much about Rise of the Tomb Raider aside from the fact that it'll be exclusive to Xbox to begin with, and that's what everyone seems to be focusing on right now.

However, we do know that the story will pick up from where the first game left off.

"In her first adventure, Lara Croft was forged into a true survivor, but she glimpsed a deeper, secret world," reads the Xbox website. "In the next chapter of her journey, Lara must use her survival skills and wits, learn to trust new friends, and ultimately accept her destiny as the Tomb Raider."

"Featuring epic, high octane action moment, Rise of the Tomb Raider will take gamers to multiple locations around the world filled with exploration spaces that are some of the most beautifully hostile places on earth. In addition, after hearing the cry from fans loud and clear, the game will put the tombs back into Tomb Raider, all in the franchise's gritty Survival-Action style."
