Apple's iPhone 7 is still well worth your attention, not least because it's cheaper and more colourful

Apple's now launched three new phones for 2017/2018. They are the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and the star of the show; the 10th anniversary iPhone X.

The iPhone X is the one with all the fancy-pants technology onboard; stuff like an edge-to-edge OLED display and 3D face scanning to replace the Touch ID fingerprint scanner. The latter may be one of the reasons it will release later and why it will be in short supply until inside 2018, at least according to analysts at WSJ and KGI Securities' Ming-Chi Kuo, who say that some of the components for the 3D scanner are causing production bottlenecks inside Apple's manufacturing.

Anyway, there's also the new iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus which is currently available for purchase, and for which there are no such supply issues. But this isn't all Apple is offering, no sir. Currently, Apple offers a bigger portfolio of phones than ever before, with the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus still being available, as well as the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, and the iPhone SE.

That's EIGHT phones in total across quite a wide range of pricing, from Apple at least. None of them are exactly cheap, mind you, again, this is Apple after all.

However, it's fair to say that if you like fancy color finishes the range that spoiled us most was the iPhone 7 series. The current iPhone 8 and iPhone X are available in a very small selection of colors (three and two respectively).

The iPhone 7, meanwhile, which really isn't THAT different from the iPhone 8 tech and spec wise and is much cheaper now, comes in no fewer than FIVE distinct colour choices. That's the most Apple has ever offered at one time.

As you can see, your choices are Black, Silver, Gold, Rose Gold, and Jet Black - which is a glossy finish instead of the regular matte metallic Black.

Right now we probably wouldn't advocate getting an iPhone 8. Sure, it has a faster processor (the benefits of which you won't notice for a good long while - not until apps and games get fancier), but apart from that, there's not a lot to fuss over. Rich goes into much more detail in this article as to why the iPhone 8 is something of a damp squib, in our view.

Nope, the iPhone 7 is still where it's at if you're not going all out on an iPhone X (which will cost a ton and will mean you'll have to wait patiently). It's cheaper, just as good in all the ways which count, and it comes in a diverse rainbow of color options. A weird, metallic, black, silver and gold rainbow...yes.
