The Nokia Android series will definitely get Oreo and Android P, HMD confirms

HMD Global, the firm responsible for the new line of Nokia's Android-based smartphones, has confirmed it will support the new devices with Android updates at least as far as Android P; as in, the next build which will follow the only-just-released Android Oreo.

Having already confirmed that all the current Nokia Android phones will get Oreo (having launched on Nougat), HMD Global revealed its intentions to upgrade the handsets to Android P at its launch of the Nokia 8 in the Philippines.

Subsequently, on Twitter, HMD's chief technology officer Mikko Jaakkola, responding to a fan question about unlocked bootloaders for the range, said "We would unlock one model at the time. What device would you unlock first?" implying it was not at all out of the question for official unlocked bootloader support. That would mean that even after HMD stops supporting official updates, users would be able to add custom software updates to their handsets.

Work on the Oreo update is still ongoing, but it isn't expected to take very long as the Nokia Android series runs a stock build of Google's software, so little tweaking is needed. HMD plans to have the update out for the Nokia range by the close of 2017.
