Red makes some of the best (and most expensive) cameras on the planet, and in just a few months it will join the phone market with its first ever Android phone, the Red Hydrogen One.

The Hydrogen One has been on the cards for A LONG time now, and there have been many delays getting it to market. However, Red is now said to have finalized everything and it has also confirmed a release date.

Hydrogen One Release Date

According to the company, the Hydrogen One will get a release date on November 2 and it will retail for $1295.

AT&T and Verizon will be carrying the phone in the US, while Telcel will be doing the honors in Mexico.

Those that pre-ordered the handset, however, will get their units nice and early – October 9, according to Red.

Here is the timeline Red laid out for the release of the Hydrogen One and the special edition Houdini model:

• November 2nd. This is the carrier launch date for AT&T, Verizon and Telcel (Mexico). Shipping only aluminum and colors are Black and Shadow. Titanium will not be available from the carriers until 2019 and then in very limited quantities. Price will be $1295 for aluminum Black and Shadow. We appreciate the patience and support that the carriers have shown the past few months.
• October 9th. This is the release date for HYDROGEN Pre-order customers. Black aluminum will ship 1st and Titanium models will follow shortly after. The Ti version has proven to be very challenging in production. My bet is that these will be highly desirable and extremely hard to get for several months even after the official launch. If you were brave on this one, you will be rewarded with scarcity.
• August 31st thru September 11th. This is the release date for the Houdini Developer’s Model. There will be an event at RED Studios Hollywood to kick off delivery of this program on August 31st. Quantities for Houdini are EXTREMELY Limited. I guarantee there will not be enough slots for all that want to jump in so read carefully and then email as soon as you can if you want in. 1st come 1st served. If you already signed up for Houdini, just confirm you are OK with the change in the program.

Red Hydrogen One Camera

The BIG USP of this phone, obviously, is its camera. Red says that only its cinema cameras will be able to outperform the unit installed inside the Hydrogen One, which is a pretty big claim.

Another USP? 4V – or, four view – whereby the camera’s holographic display will be able to play back 4D content, essentially.

How this will work (and look) remains to be seen, but it’s definitely a pretty novel idea that will almost certainly draw the phone A LOT of attention when it arrives later this year.
