And no… it's not just because of your pictures

Does your iPhone consistently tell you that is running low on space? Do you own a 16GB or, worse still, an 8GB iPhone? If so, we feel your pain – 8GB and 16GB simply just isn’t enough storage these days.

Apple’s iOS platform is now bigger than ever – as well as being 64-bit – and this means it takes up more room. Back in the day, it might have taken up under 1GB of storage, but now it’s almost 2GB (1.7GB), which is a large slice of your valuable space.

But it’s not just iOS that is taking up too much room; no, applications have grown considerably in the past several years, meaning an application that once needed 4MB back in 2013 (hello, Snapchat) now needs 203MB, a whopping 51x increase!

And it's not just Snapchat. According to Sensor Tower, the most popular apps on iPhone are now, on average, 12x larger than they were in 2013. Facebook takes the crown, however, as it clocks in at 388MB, whereas back in the day it used to only account for 32MB.

Games have increased in size as well; Candy Crush Saga grew from 48MB to 223MB. Go for something more graphically intense, however, and you’re looking at 1GB+ of space, which, if you’re running an 8GB phone is 1/8th of your entire storage!

So what’s Apple doing about it? Simple: it’s not making 8GB and 16GB iPhones anymore. And for those still suffering with iPhone with limited storage – and that is a lot of people out there – the company is making changes in iOS 11 that will help free up some space.

One such change is suggestions about removing apps that you haven’t used in awhile. Another involves cutting down the size of photos and videos. These measures will only go so far, though. In the end, you’re going to have to get a new phone with more storage.
